Print Trends: Things to Watch For in 2016

From wide format to technology, see what we predict to be some of the biggest print trends of the new year.

Wide Format

The presence of wide format printing continues to increase at traditional industry tradeshows such as Graph Expo. Specifically, growth in 2016 and beyond is expected in the soft signage market. More and more, these fabric graphics are replacing traditional vinyl, plastic, and paper signage in retail spaces. The Specialty Graphic Imaging Association (SGIA), an industry leader in the signage market, has predicted this to be one of the strongest growth segments in the print industry. In fact, they project a 30% growth in soft signage production annually through 2019. Benefits of soft signage include:

  • A more luxurious appearance
  • Rich, eye-catching color
  • Lightweight and easily foldable for shipping

Because of the increase in soft signage, aluminum extrusion systems have become popular display installs. Such displays can include backlit graphics that use LED technology and provide a unique and flexible method to display the graphics.

Digital Print and Inkjet Technologies

New advancements in digital and inkjet printing technologies will require marketers to think more about their projects and their anticipated end result. The capability of these machines continues to expand, offering marketers a wide range of options to consider when designing their projects. Additionally, as the machines evolve, the speed at which they print increases, resulting in a higher volume of product produced in a shorter period of time.

Also, the ability to print variable data and use personalization in the execution of direct mail campaigns provides a compelling reason for a recipient to act upon the marketing message compared to non-personalized mail pieces. If running direct mail campaigns in 2016, consider customizing the content of your message to the recipient to increase your return on investment.

Technology and Automation

The use of technology such as marketing automation systems and project management tools continues to be on the rise. One technology that has also seen significant growth is the marketing distribution platform, in part because of its ability to offer easy print-on-demand or web-to-print solutions. These platforms function in a way that allows multiple users to access corporate branded marketing materials for quick download or to order for print. Users can also customize pieces with variable data that can be specific to the user or their location.

Expect to see more from this software in the coming years, as new software developments occur and companies realize its benefit. A marketing distribution platform is an essential software solution for organizations that have several locations and require the flexibility of running local marketing campaigns. Essentially, distributed marketing platforms provide the web-to-print services that many organizations are now leveraging to reduce workload and optimize productivity. Some examples of organization structures that may benefit from a marketing distribution platform include franchises, dealer/distributor networks, or even a remote sales team.
